MURCIA. LOCATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MURCIA

Murcia is a Spanish city, capital of the municipality of the same name and of the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. It is the center of the region of the Huerta de Murcia and its metropolitan area. It is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula on the banks of the Segura River, in the so-called Murcian pre-coastal depression, 40 kilometers in a straight line from the Mediterranean Sea. With 441,003 inhabitants, 4 Murcia ranks 7th in the list of municipalities in Spain by population.

The urban area of the city (or metropolitan area), although not officially established, would comprise some ten municipalities of the Region of Murcia, with a population of 643 854 inhabitants in 2013, spread over a total area of 1230.92 km2, with a population density of 515 hab / km2.5 In this way, the urban area of Murcia would occupy the 10th place in the list of metropolitan areas of Spain.

Murcia is an important municipality of services in which the tertiary sector has succeeded to its former status of agricultural export par excellence, thanks to its famous and fertile orchard, which was known by the nickname of the Garden of Europe. Among its most important industries are food, textiles, chemistry, distillation and manufacture of furniture and building materials, many of them located in the Industrial West, considered one of the largest in the peninsula6 (shared with the municipality of Alcantarilla).

It is also an important center of great university tradition since the first university was founded in 1272.7 It is currently home to two universities, the public University of Murcia and the private San Antonio Catholic University, which attract around 50,000 students to the municipality.

    • From the south & west. You have to take the motorway N-340. Once you get to Almería or Granada you have to change to the highway A-7.
    • From the east. you have to take the highway Mediterráneo (A-7).
